What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine roots and affixes to form recognized words. They use clues from each word part to determine meaning, then choose a sentence context that fits.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students form recognized words and explain what each part contributes. Their sentences show the correct meaning, grammatical form, and tone of each word.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may join meaningful parts into a word that does not exist. They may ignore how an affix changes meaning or grammatical role. They may create a valid word but misuse it in the sentence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Form two valid words from port using trans-, im-, -able, or -ation. Label the parts and use each word in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give teams root, prefix, and suffix cards; have them build valid words, define each part, and write a sentence.
Ask students to explain how credible, incredible, and credibility differ in meaning and grammatical role.
Play a word-building relay where teams draw one root and two affixes, create a valid word, then verify it in a dictionary.
Students collect unfamiliar words from news headlines, break each into parts, and use one related word in a summary.
