What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine Greek and Latin roots with prefixes and suffixes to form valid words. They explain how each word part shapes meaning and use the new word correctly in a sentence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given dict, pre-, -ion, and -able, a student can form predict, prediction, and predictable. The student can define each word, identify its part of speech, and use it correctly in context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may join word parts in any order and assume every combination makes a real word. They may also ignore spelling changes or use a noun where the sentence needs a verb or adjective.

How to Assess It

Give students the root port and the affixes ex-, im-, trans-, -able, and -ation. Ask them to create two real words, define both, and use one in a clear sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students arrange root and affix cards to build words, then label each part and write the completed word on a mini whiteboard.

  2. Students answer the prompt, "How do portable, import, and transportation differ?" and explain what each affix contributes.

  3. Teams play a word-building relay, earning one point for a real word and one for a sentence using it correctly.

  4. Students collect five Greek or Latin-rooted words from headlines, menus, or product labels and explain how one word is constructed.
