What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine Greek or Latin roots with prefixes and suffixes to form real words. They work out each word's meaning and use it correctly in a sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can build real words from given roots and affixes and explain how each part affects meaning. They use the completed words correctly in clear sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume any prefix, root, and suffix can be combined into a real word. They may confuse affix meanings, miss spelling changes, or use the new word as the wrong part of speech.
How to Assess It
- Give students the root act and the affixes re-, inter-, -ion, and -ive. Ask them to build two real words, define them, and use each in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs root, prefix, and suffix cards to assemble three real words, then place each word beside a matching definition.
Ask students to explain how adding re- and -ion changes act in react and reaction, then write sentences showing each meaning.
Run a word-building relay where teams draw one root and two affixes, build a valid word, and earn a point for correct context.
Students collect five affixed words from menus, signs, or product labels, break each into parts, and use one in a new sentence.
