What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine Greek and Latin roots with prefixes and suffixes to make real words. They explain how each part affects meaning and use the new word in a sentence that fits.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build prediction from pre-, dict, and -ion, explain the parts, and use prediction correctly. The student can also reject combinations that are not accepted words or do not fit the sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume any root and affix combination creates a real word. They may ignore spelling changes when parts combine. Some define a word from one part only, then use it in a sentence that does not fit.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Use pre-, dict, and -ion to build a word, define each part, and write a sentence that clearly shows the word's meaning.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cards labeled geo, graph, bio, logy, tele, and scope, then have them build valid words and match definitions.

  2. Write three sentences using action, active, and inactive, then explain how each added word part changes the meaning.

  3. Play a word-building relay where teams draw one root and two affix cards, build a real word, and use it correctly.

  4. Have students collect words from food packages or school signs, mark the roots and affixes, and explain each word's meaning.
