What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine Greek and Latin roots or base words with prefixes and suffixes to form real words. They explain how each word part shapes meaning and use the completed word in a fitting sentence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build several valid words from a given root and explain each meaning from its parts. The student chooses the right derived form, such as credible or credibility, to match the sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may combine parts mechanically and produce forms English does not use, such as miscredible. They may confuse related forms, using credibility where credible is required, or treat a root's meaning as the full definition.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Use the root port with any of these affixes: trans, im, ex, able, er. Build two valid words, define each from its parts, and use each in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs root and affix cards, then have students assemble valid words, label each part, and test each word in a sentence.

  2. Write two words using act and these affixes: re, inter, ive, ion, or; explain how each affix changes meaning and sentence role.

  3. Run a word factory relay where teams draw one root and two affix cards, build a valid word, and earn points for accurate context.

  4. Collect words from news headlines, product labels, or job ads, then rebuild each from its root and affixes and explain its use.
