What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into meaningful parts, including prefixes, roots, and suffixes. They use each part’s origin and meaning, then check the result against the sentence context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify meaningful prefixes, roots, and suffixes in unfamiliar words. They combine those meanings with sentence context and explain why their definition makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split words at the wrong letters or treat every word part as meaningful. They may rely on one memorized root meaning, ignore spelling changes, or accept a definition that does not fit the sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “The circumspect editor checked every source before publishing.” Students identify circum and spect, define each part, and infer circumspect.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs prefix, root, and suffix cards to build words, then have them label each part and predict each word’s meaning.
Ask students to compare transport, import, and export, then write how each prefix changes the Latin root port, meaning carry.
Run a root match game where teams pair Greek and Latin roots with meanings, sample words, and quick definitions.
Have students collect three unfamiliar words from a news article, deconstruct each one, and check their predictions with a dictionary.
