What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students split unfamiliar words into prefixes, roots, and suffixes. They use word origins, part meanings, and sentence clues to infer or confirm the whole word’s meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately label useful word parts and state what each part means. They combine those meanings with sentence clues, then explain or verify a reasonable definition.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split a word at the wrong place or treat every beginning or ending as an affix. They may also ignore context or assume a root has exactly the same meaning in every word.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, “The archaeologist reconstructed the shattered vase.” Ask them to label the word parts in “reconstructed,” define it, and explain their reasoning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs cards with prefixes, roots, and suffixes to combine into words, define, and check in a dictionary.
Ask students to compare transport and portable, then write how the shared root and different affixes shape each meaning.
Run a root relay where teams match Greek and Latin roots to meanings, examples, and new words.
Have students decode words such as biodegradable, antibacterial, and recyclable from product labels, then explain what each label claims.
