What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students split unfamiliar words into roots, prefixes, and suffixes, then use those parts to propose a meaning. They check that meaning against the sentence and the word’s history when relevant.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can annotate an unfamiliar word from a grade-level text and identify useful roots and affixes. They can explain a likely meaning and confirm that it fits the sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from one familiar-looking chunk, even when it is not the word’s true root. They may ignore how an affix changes meaning or part of speech, or accept a definition that does not fit the passage.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: In “The witness gave an equivocal answer, carefully avoiding either a yes or no,” label the word parts, infer the meaning, and cite context support.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups prefix, root, and suffix cards to build words such as retrospective, benevolent, and contradiction, then justify each predicted meaning.

  2. Ask students to explain how the roots and affixes in “anthropocentric” shape its meaning in a passage about human influence on nature.

  3. Run a root-match relay where teams pair ten Greek and Latin roots with meanings, then use each pair to decode a new word.

  4. Have students collect unfamiliar words from news headlines, medicine labels, or job postings and annotate how word parts clarify each meaning.
