What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break unfamiliar words into roots, base words, prefixes, and suffixes. They combine those parts with word history and context clues to determine the meaning used in a text.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can mark meaningful word parts and explain what each part contributes. They use sentence context to confirm or revise a likely meaning, then verify it with a dictionary or etymology source.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split a word in the wrong place, rely on one familiar root, or ignore how an affix changes meaning. They may also choose the first dictionary definition without checking the sentence context.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “The policy was counterproductive because it caused the problem it was meant to prevent.” Break apart counterproductive, define it, and cite a context clue.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cards with roots, prefixes, and suffixes; students build words, predict meanings, then verify them in a dictionary.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing how word parts and sentence context reveal an unfamiliar word’s meaning in the class text.

  3. Play a root relay where teams match unfamiliar words to meanings and earn a point only after explaining each word part.

  4. Have students collect unfamiliar words from news headlines or product labels, trace one root, and explain how it shapes the meaning.
