What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break unfamiliar words into meaningful parts, then use those parts and sentence context to infer a likely meaning. They explain how a root, affix, or word history supports their inference.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a grade-level passage, students identify useful word parts and propose an accurate meaning for an unfamiliar word. They support the meaning with both word analysis and context clues.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume a familiar-looking word part always has the same meaning. They may also ignore sentence context or treat every beginning and ending as an affix.

How to Assess It

Give students this sentence: “The benevolent coach quietly paid the team’s tournament fees.” Ask them to identify a useful word part, infer the meaning of “benevolent,” and explain their reasoning.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs root, prefix, and suffix cards to combine, define, and check against a dictionary.

  2. Ask students to explain whether context or word parts gave stronger evidence for an unfamiliar word in a class text.

  3. Play Root Relay, where teams match unfamiliar words to roots and write a context-based definition for each.

  4. Collect words from medicine labels, news headlines, and job listings, then annotate their roots and affixes to predict meanings.
