What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break unfamiliar words into prefixes, roots, and suffixes, then use those parts to infer meaning. They check their inference against the sentence and relevant word history.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can mark the meaningful parts of an unfamiliar word and explain what each part adds. They can propose a definition, test it against context, and revise it when needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may divide words at the wrong letters or mistake a familiar-looking chunk for a root. They may define each part correctly but combine the meanings inaccurately or ignore sentence context.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “The scientist studied microscopic organisms.” Break apart “microscopic,” label each part, and explain the word’s meaning in the sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups prefix, root, and suffix cards to build words, then have them record each word’s parts and likely meaning.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing how the parts of “transportation” help reveal its meaning.

  3. Play Root Match, where teams pair Greek or Latin roots with meanings and earn a point by using each in a word.

  4. Have students examine product labels or news headlines, circle complex words, and use their parts to explain each word’s meaning.
