What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take part in discussions and writing with a clear goal and audience in mind. They connect ideas inside one text, across texts, and to experiences or issues outside the texts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student builds on another person’s idea and supports a response with specific details from the reading. The student explains how each connection strengthens an interpretation or fits a chosen purpose and audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a personal memory as a useful connection even when it does not clarify the text. They may summarize both texts, name only a shared topic, or ignore how purpose and audience shape a response.
How to Assess It
- Give students two 100-word excerpts on the same topic. Ask them to identify one connection within an excerpt, one across excerpts, and one beyond them, then explain why one matters.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two printed passages and sticky notes to mark and explain one connection within a passage, across passages, and beyond both.
Ask which connection changes understanding most; students discuss, then write a six-sentence response using two quoted details.
Play Connection Sort: teams place example cards under within-text, across-text, or beyond-text headings, then defend one disputed choice.
Compare a school announcement with a local news post, then rewrite one paragraph for the other audience and explain each change.
