What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build on others’ ideas in speech and writing instead of giving isolated reactions. They use relevant links to earlier passages, other works, and outside knowledge to clarify or extend meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student cites specific details, explains how a connection deepens interpretation, and responds directly to another person’s point. The response fits the purpose, such as analyzing, comparing, questioning, or persuading.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a connection without explaining why it matters. They may rely on vague personal reactions, ignore a peer’s point, or compare texts without citing details.
How to Assess It
- Give students two related excerpts and a classmate’s comment. Ask them to write a four-sentence reply that addresses the comment and explains one supported connection.

Ways to Teach It
Build a sticky-note map linking one passage to another passage, a second text, and a current event or personal experience.
Discuss: Which connection changes your reading most, and what exact words support it?
Play Connection Relay: teams draw within, between, or beyond cards and explain a supported connection before earning a point.
Compare a news article with public comments, then write a reply connecting the article, another source, and a community experience.
