What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read multiple sources to define an issue, compare possible responses, and judge which evidence matters. They create a clear message that recommends an action for a specific audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can define the problem, compare options, and select credible evidence that supports a practical recommendation. The student shapes the format, tone, and reasoning for the people making the decision.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize sources without using them to support a recommendation. They may rely on emotional claims, ignore conflicting evidence, or write without considering the audience’s priorities.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short, conflicting sources about extending the school lunch period. Ask them to write five sentences recommending an action, citing both sources, and answering one objection.

Ways to Teach It
Teams sort evidence cards about cafeteria waste into causes, limits, and solutions, then build a poster recommending one practical change.
Ask, “Should schools limit student phone use?” Students write a claim, support it with evidence, and address one opposing view.
Play Audience Switch: students revise the same proposal for a principal, student council, and families, earning points for useful changes.
Students survey classmates about a school concern, graph the results, and email an evidence-based recommendation to the appropriate staff member.
