What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather useful details from written, visual, or spoken sources to address a real problem. They create a clear message that recommends an action and supports it with evidence suited to the audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify the problem, compare possible responses, and select relevant evidence. The student can present a practical recommendation that addresses the audience's likely questions and explains why the choice should work.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize sources without proposing an action, or give an opinion without evidence. They may include unrelated facts, overlook other options, or use language that does not fit the audience.

How to Assess It

Give students two short notices about cafeteria food waste. Ask them to write a five-sentence email to the principal recommending one change and citing two details.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Teams sort a bag of clean classroom discards, record patterns, and create a poster recommending one way to reduce waste.

  2. Discuss this prompt: Which school rule should change, and what evidence would persuade the principal to consider your proposal?

  3. Play Evidence Match by pairing problem cards with source details, then explain which detail best supports each proposed solution.

  4. Read local park guidelines and visitor comments, then write a council message recommending one improvement for safety or access.
