What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine information about a problem, judge which evidence is useful, and decide on a reasonable response. They create a text that uses evidence and audience-aware choices to shape a decision.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the problem, compare relevant evidence, and propose a workable response. Their final text makes a clear claim, supports it with accurate details, and addresses a specific decision-maker.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize sources without using them to support a recommendation. They may rely on opinion, ignore conflicting evidence, or use a tone that does not fit the intended audience.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article and data chart, then ask: “Write a 150-word recommendation to the principal that uses two details from the sources.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give teams a school map, sample traffic data, and sticky notes; have them mark a problem and build an evidence-based solution.

  2. Read two proposals for changing the school schedule, then write which proposal the board should choose and why.

  3. Run an evidence-sorting relay where teams match claims to source excerpts, reject weak evidence, and explain each choice.

  4. Have students write a letter to a local official proposing a solution to a community problem supported by two credible sources.
