What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read, view, or listen to simple texts about a problem or choice. They use details from those texts to suggest a solution or persuade others to make a decision.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify a problem or choice presented in a text. They can create a clear message that uses a relevant detail to suggest a solution or support a decision.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give an opinion without using any facts from the text. They may name a solution that does not fit the problem or assume the longest message is the most convincing.
How to Assess It
- Show a short notice about a crowded classroom library. Ask students to draw or write one solution and include one detail from the notice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards showing playground litter, then have them sort causes and solutions and create a one-page cleanup sign.
Read two class pet fact sheets, then ask which pet the class should choose and what fact supports that choice.
Play Solution Match: students pair problem cards with action cards and explain which text clue makes each match work.
Review the cafeteria menu and allergy notes, then have students recommend a safe snack in a short note to the teacher.
