What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to or look at simple texts for information that can help with a problem or choice. They use speaking, drawing, labels, or sentences to suggest a solution or persuade others.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name the problem or decision, find a useful detail in a read-aloud or picture text, and explain how it helps. The student can create a clear message that gives a solution or reason for a choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may share a preference without giving a reason, or copy a detail that does not address the problem. They may think only full sentences count as texts, rather than pictures, labels, signs, or spoken messages.

How to Assess It

Read a short note: “Our class has too many broken crayons. What should we do?” Ask students to draw and label one solution, then tell why it would help.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out mixed classroom supplies, read picture labels on bins, then have pairs sort the items and make a new label for one bin.

  2. After reading two playground proposals, students choose one and draw or dictate a response using one detail that supports their choice.

  3. Play Problem-Solution Match with picture cards, asking students to pair each classroom problem with a helpful sign, note, or spoken message.

  4. Have the class examine cafeteria picture menus, vote on a snack, and create a recommendation poster with one reason for the principal.
