What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use information from short texts, pictures, signs, or conversations to understand a problem or choice. They create a spoken or written message that recommends a solution or action.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the problem or choice described in one or more short texts. They create a clear message that suggests an action and supports it with a relevant detail.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may state an opinion without giving a reason from the text. They may name the problem but offer no workable solution, or write without considering their audience.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short note about litter on the playground. Ask: “Write two sentences to the principal suggesting a solution and use one detail from the note.”

Ways to Teach It
Set out mixed classroom supplies, then have pairs read storage labels and write a plan for sorting the items.
Ask, “Should our class add a reading corner?” Students write a choice, a reason, and one detail from a class survey.
Play Solution Match by pairing problem cards with message cards, then revise any message that does not fit its audience.
Read the cafeteria menu and a student poll, then write the manager a note recommending one lunch choice.
