What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share ideas about stories through drawing, writing, and talk. They listen and respond to others. They connect story details to another book or personal experience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student makes a relevant comment, listens, and answers a partner’s question. The student explains a connection to another book or personal experience. They choose words or pictures that fit the person receiving the message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a favorite part instead of making a connection. They may repeat a partner’s words without adding an idea, or make a message without considering who will receive it.
How to Assess It
- After two picture book read-alouds, say, “Draw one way the books connect, then explain it to a partner.” Check that each child explains a clear link and answers the partner’s question.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards from two read-alouds; students match connected characters, settings, or events and explain each match.
Students respond to the prompt, “Show how this character’s problem is like something in your life,” then share their drawing with a partner.
Play Connection Toss: a student catches a beanbag, names a link to the book, then asks a classmate to add one.
Students make a thank-you card for a school helper, choosing words and a picture that fit that reader and purpose.
