What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make meaning from stories, pictures, and simple informational texts. They create drawings, labels, or spoken responses to compare ideas and share what they think. They point to a detail that supports their thinking.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students compare two characters, events, pictures, or ideas. They share an opinion through drawing, speaking, or early writing. They support it with a clear detail from the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a favorite text without explaining why. They may retell the whole text instead of comparing ideas. Some use personal experience as evidence but cannot point to a supporting picture or detail.

How to Assess It

Read two short picture books, then ask, “Which character solved the problem better?” Have each student draw an answer and name one supporting detail.

Ways to Teach It

  1. After two read-alouds, students sort picture cards by text, then build a class chart showing one similarity and one difference.

  2. Ask, “Which character made the better choice?” Students draw their answer and dictate one story detail that supports it.

  3. Play Detail Detective: show two pages, name a claim, and have students hold up the page that gives supporting evidence.

  4. Compare two lunch menus, then have students circle the better choice for a class picnic and explain why.
