What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use annotations, summaries, charts, or other written formats to make complex ideas easier to examine. They compare evidence, identify patterns, and create a clear record that supports a judgment.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can turn source material into an accurate annotation, summary, chart, or evidence table. The student uses that work to compare ideas, judge claims, and explain conclusions with relevant evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize a source without analyzing its ideas. They may add opinions without evidence, or make a chart that looks organized but changes or oversimplifies the source.

How to Assess It

Give students two short paragraphs with opposing views on school phone rules. Ask them to complete a comparison chart and write a three-sentence judgment using evidence from both paragraphs.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups evidence cards to sort into a claim, evidence, and reasoning grid, then have them write a supported verdict.

  2. Ask students which format, annotation, summary, or comparison chart, best reveals weak reasoning in an argument and why.

  3. Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claims with supporting details, then reject details that are irrelevant or misleading.

  4. Compare two online product reviews, build a rating table, and write a recommendation that explains which review is more trustworthy.
