What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students create annotations, summaries, charts, or brief responses that show relationships among claims, evidence, and reasoning. They use those materials to judge the quality, credibility, and implications of ideas.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a complex text, students choose a useful format and accurately capture its central claim, evidence, and reasoning. They use that work to make a supported judgment about the text's quality or credibility.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat summary as analysis or copy quotations without explaining their meaning. They may also judge ideas by personal agreement rather than evidence, reasoning, and source credibility.

How to Assess It

Give students a short editorial and a three-column exit ticket labeled Claim, Evidence, and Evaluation. Ask them to complete each column using one cited detail.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed claim and evidence cards from an editorial to sort into strong, weak, or irrelevant support, then build an evidence map.

  2. After reading two commentaries, ask: Which author makes the stronger case, and what evidence and reasoning support your judgment?

  3. Play an analysis relay where teams add a claim, evidence, reasoning, or counterclaim to a shared chart and cite the source line.

  4. Compare two product reviews, create a buyer recommendation table using credibility, evidence, and missing information, then choose one product.
