What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break a text into parts such as claims, evidence, reasons, and key ideas. They create notes, charts, summaries, or comparisons to analyze meaning and judge quality.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can create annotations, charts, summaries, or comparisons that reveal claims, evidence, and connections. They use those constructed texts to explain a source's strengths, weaknesses, or meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may retell the source instead of explaining how its ideas work. They may judge a text using personal preference rather than specific evidence, or create charts that organize details without showing relationships.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article and ask them to create a claim, evidence, and reasoning chart. Have them add one sentence judging whether the evidence supports the claim.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut an article into claim, evidence, and reasoning strips, then have students sort and arrange them on a labeled poster.

  2. After reading two accounts, write which is more convincing and support the judgment with two details from the texts.

  3. Play an evidence match game where teams pair claims with supporting details and reject details that are irrelevant or weak.

  4. Compare online product reviews, then create a brief buyer's guide that rates each review's evidence and reliability.
