What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make meaning from words, pictures, and demonstrations. They use speaking, drawing, and early writing to explain an idea or show how something works.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use details from words, pictures, or demonstrations to explain an idea. They create a drawing, oral explanation, or short written text that clearly teaches the idea or shows steps in order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell every detail instead of explaining the main idea or process. They may draw unrelated pictures, copy words without understanding, or place steps out of order.
How to Assess It
- After a read-aloud or class demonstration, say, "Draw and label what you learned. Then tell me how your page teaches the idea or steps."

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards showing how to plant a seed; students order them, explain the sequence, and make a labeled process page.
After a read-aloud, ask students to name one new idea and point to the picture or words that taught it.
Play Guess My Steps: one student explains a familiar routine while classmates arrange matching picture cards in the correct order.
Study a cafeteria menu, map, or class schedule, then have students create one that helps a classmate make a choice.
