What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read or view a text to work out how an idea or process works. They then create a clear written, visual, or spoken explanation for others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select accurate details, organize steps or relationships logically, and explain why each part matters. Their text is clear enough for a peer to follow and use.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may summarize a source without explaining the concept, copy wording instead of showing understanding, or list steps without showing connections. They may favor polished design over accurate content and useful evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage and diagram. Ask, “In six sentences, explain how the process works using three accurate details and one connection between steps.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups mixed process cards to sequence, then have them create an annotated flowchart explaining each connection.
After reading two explanations of one concept, students discuss which teaches better and defend their choice with two specific features.
Run an explanation relay where each student adds one accurate sentence, then teams revise gaps, repetition, and unclear links.
Students turn a workplace procedure, such as reporting a safety hazard, into a one-page guide for new employees.
