What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read, view, or listen to information to figure out how an idea or process works. They create clear explanations using words, pictures, diagrams, or ordered steps.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify key facts or steps and put them in a clear order. The student can explain the idea in their own words using details, sequence words, labels, or diagrams.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy sentences from a source without showing what they mean. They may omit key steps, put steps out of order, or add pictures that do not clarify the explanation.

How to Assess It

Give students four illustrated steps of seed germination. Ask them to arrange the steps and write three sentences explaining the process with sequence words.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs build a paper airplane from written directions, mark confusing steps, then rewrite one step and test it with another pair.

  2. After reading a short water cycle text, ask, “How does water return to the ground?” Students answer with evidence and sequence words.

  3. Play Process Mix-Up: teams arrange shuffled cards showing a butterfly life cycle, then explain why each step belongs in that position.

  4. Students interview the cafeteria manager about how lunch is prepared, then create a labeled flowchart explaining the process to families.
