What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read, view, or listen to a source to understand a concept or process. They use what they learned to create an explanation through writing, speaking, diagrams, or another clear format.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the main concept, key details, and sequence in a source. They create an accurate explanation using clear organization, relevant evidence, and subject-specific words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy sentences without showing what they learned. They may list steps out of order, leave out key details, or explain ideas without evidence from the source.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short text about the water cycle. Ask them to draw and label the process, then explain it in four sentences using two details from the text.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups mixed-up cards showing pollination, then have them order the cards and write a caption for each step.
After reading about erosion, ask students to write: How does moving water change land, and which details support your explanation?
Play Process Relay, where teams read a short procedure and race to arrange step cards, correcting any missing or misplaced steps.
Study a school lunch menu and nutrition guide, then create a one-page explanation of how to build a balanced meal.
