What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read, view, or listen to sources to work out how an idea or process works. They then create an explanation, directions, diagram, or other text that makes the learning clear to someone else.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can pull key information from words, visuals, and examples, then explain the idea in their own words. Their text is accurate, logically ordered, and clear to a reader unfamiliar with the topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy source sentences instead of showing their own understanding. They may list facts but leave out cause and effect, sequence, or connections among ideas. They may add a diagram that is decorative rather than labeled and useful.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph and flowchart showing how compost forms. Ask them to write four sentences explaining the process, including sequence words and two source details.

Ways to Teach It
Build a paper helicopter from written directions, mark confusing steps, then rewrite the directions with labeled sketches and precise sequence words.
Read a paragraph and diagram about the water cycle, then write how condensation leads to precipitation using evidence from both sources.
Play Concept Match with term, example, and nonexample cards; teams justify each match, then write a two sentence definition.
Compare two school lunch recycling guides, identify which is clearer, then create a student friendly guide for your cafeteria.
