What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students select sources that fit a clear task. They gather and connect useful details to explain a topic, build a skill, solve a problem, or support a choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why each source fits the task, take accurate notes, and connect details across sources. The final response uses relevant evidence to reach a sound conclusion or communicate a clear idea.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first source they find, copy details without context, or treat every source as equally reliable. They may list facts without connecting them to the task or their own conclusions.

How to Assess It

Give students two short sources about later school start times. Ask them to write a three-sentence recommendation using one relevant detail from each source.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed source cards to sort by purpose, reliability, and usefulness for answering a question about teen sleep.

  2. Ask students to write which of two articles better supports a school policy decision, then defend their choice with specific evidence.

  3. Run an Evidence Relay where teams match claims to supporting quotations and explain each match before earning a point.

  4. Have students review menus, nutrition labels, and dietary guidance to recommend a balanced lunch within a set budget.
