What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose and use texts based on a specific goal, such as learning a process, answering a question, or deciding between options. They combine useful details from multiple sources and present what they learned to an audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify which details matter, explain how each source helps, and connect evidence across texts. The student can complete a task or support a recommendation without copying or listing unrelated facts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every source as equally useful, choose the first search result, or collect quotations without checking relevance. They may summarize sources separately but never connect the ideas or use them to reach a decision.
How to Assess It
- Give students a school phone policy and a chart showing distraction rates. Ask them to recommend a study hall phone rule using one detail from each text.

Ways to Teach It
Give teams a paper model kit and two instruction sheets; have them build the model, then mark which directions solved each problem.
Ask students to write: Which source most changed your thinking, and what exact detail caused the change?
Run a source-purpose card sort where students match short texts to tasks, then defend one match with evidence.
Students compare two job-training program pages, choose one for a fictional applicant, and write a recommendation using details from both.
