What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read or listen to a text and select useful details for a clear purpose. They explain what they learned, apply a skill, make a supported choice, or share an idea.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose details that match a question or purpose. They use those details to explain new learning, complete a task, support a choice, or clearly teach someone else.

Common Misconceptions

Students may retell the whole text instead of choosing details that fit the task. They may state a personal opinion, copy a sentence, or make a choice without explaining how the text supports it.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph about reusable water bottles. Ask them to name one thing they learned, make a choice, and support it with two details.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place two short animal fact cards at each table; students highlight useful details, then build a labeled mini-poster teaching another group.

  2. Read two playground proposals, then ask, "Which should our class choose, and which details from the texts support your choice?"

  3. Play Evidence Match: teams pair question cards with detail cards, then explain why each detail helps answer the question.

  4. Compare two snack labels, choose one for a class hike, and write a note using label details to justify the choice.
