What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read, view, or listen to relevant texts with a clear purpose. They use information from those texts to learn, practice a skill, make a choice, or explain an idea to others.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can choose useful information from one or more texts and explain how it serves a stated goal. The student can apply that information, justify a choice with evidence, and communicate the result clearly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may collect any fact rather than select details tied to a purpose. They may state a preference without evidence, or copy information without explaining how it supports a decision or message.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Give students a short article about later school start times. Ask for one fact learned, one decision it could inform, and one audience who could use it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups two short articles and a chart, then have them sort evidence into folders labeled learn, act, decide, and share.

  2. Ask students to write: Which source best helps our class choose a field trip, and what details support your choice?

  3. Play Purpose Match: students pair text cards with goal cards, then explain why each source fits the goal.

  4. Have students read product labels and reviews, choose a class snack within set limits, and present their evidence-based recommendation.
