What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read or view relevant sources with a clear purpose, then select useful facts, ideas, and techniques. They use that material to learn, improve their work, make informed choices, or explain ideas to others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain what each source contributes and combine details to reach a supported conclusion. They cite sources accurately and present ideas in a format suited to their audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect quotes without connecting them to a purpose or decision. They may rely on one source, copy wording, or ignore evidence that challenges their first opinion.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short sources about school phone policies. Ask, “What policy should the school adopt? Use one detail from each source and explain your decision.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed source cards and have them sort each detail under knowledge, skill, decision, or communication.
Ask, “Which source most changed your view of school phone policies, and what specific evidence caused the change?”
Run an evidence auction where teams spend points on source details, then build the strongest supported recommendation.
Have students compare program websites and labor data, then recommend one career training option for a fictional student.
