Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students read or listen to sources and select useful details for a clear purpose. They use those details to explain an idea, solve a problem, make a choice, or teach someone else.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a short source, a student identifies a relevant fact, tells where it came from, and uses it in a response. The student explains how the fact helps and leaves out unrelated information.
Common Misconceptions: Students may retell every detail instead of choosing information that fits the task. They may give an opinion without source support or copy sentences without explaining the ideas in their own words.
How to Assess It: Give students two short animal fact cards and ask, “Which animal would make the better classroom pet? Write your choice and use two facts from the cards.”

Lesson moves

Set out two weather books; pairs record three useful facts on sticky notes and sort them under clothing, safety, or activities.
After a read-aloud about animal homes, ask, “Which detail changed your thinking, and what do you understand now?”
Play Fact Match: students pair question cards with evidence cards, then explain how each fact answers the question.
Read a school lunch menu and nutrition chart, then have students recommend one balanced lunch using two details from the texts.
