What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose and use information from one or more texts for a clear purpose. They gather evidence, apply directions or ideas, make a reasoned choice, and communicate what they learned.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can pull relevant details from reliable texts and explain how those details serve the task. The student can follow written guidance, justify a choice with evidence, and present accurate information.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy facts without explaining how those facts answer the question or guide a choice. They may rely on one appealing detail, confuse opinion with evidence, or share information without naming the source.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Give students two short sources about adding a ten-minute recess. Ask for a decision, two source details, and an explanation connecting each detail to the decision.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed source cards about school start times, then have them sort evidence by how it could be used.

  2. After reading two accounts of one event, write which account better supports a decision and cite two details.

  3. Play Source Match: teams pair short excerpts with a purpose, then explain how each excerpt could be used.

  4. Compare two product reviews and a safety guide, then recommend one item for a classroom supply order.
