What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use books, pictures, charts, and other simple texts to answer questions or complete a task. They select useful details and share what they learned.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find a detail that fits the task or question. They use that detail to make a choice, explain an idea, or teach someone through speaking, drawing, or writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give an opinion without using information from the book, picture, or chart. They may copy an interesting fact that does not answer the question.
How to Assess It
- Show a short text about plant needs. Ask, “Should our class plant sit by the sunny window or on a dark shelf? Use one detail to explain.”

Ways to Teach It
Read a seed packet, then have pairs plant seeds by following the printed steps and pictures.
After a read-aloud about pets, ask, “Which pet fits our classroom best, and what detail supports your choice?”
Play Fact Match by having students pair question cards with useful facts from a familiar class text.
Use a lunch menu and picture labels to choose a balanced meal, then explain the choice to a partner.
