What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read with a clear purpose and select information that helps them learn, solve a problem, or make a choice. They use evidence to explain and share conclusions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify useful information, connect ideas across texts, and apply what they learn to a clear purpose. They explain decisions or ideas with accurate, relevant evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy facts without explaining how they connect to the task. They may treat every source as equally useful or share opinions without evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short sources about school start times. Ask them to choose one useful detail and explain how it supports a decision.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed sources on phone use, then have them sort evidence into facts, skills, decisions, and ideas.
Ask students to write: Which source changed or strengthened your view, and what specific detail caused that change?
Play Evidence Match by pairing claim cards with the strongest supporting detail from several short texts.
Compare product reviews and safety information, then write a recommendation for someone choosing between two bicycle helmets.
