What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students interpret written, visual, or spoken texts to figure out how a concept or process works. They then create an accurate explanation using relevant details and clear organization.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the main concept or process, select useful details, and show how the parts connect. They create a clear explanation with accurate evidence, logical order, and helpful transitions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy source sentences instead of explaining ideas in their own words. They may list facts without showing sequence, cause and effect, or relationships. Some add unsupported opinions or skip steps the reader needs.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph and diagram about the water cycle. Ask, "Explain the process in four ordered steps, using two details from the sources."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cut-up steps and diagrams from a process text to sequence, then have them write a clear explanation.

  2. Compare two explanations of the same concept and discuss which teaches the reader better, citing specific wording, details, and organization.

  3. Play Process Relay, where teams sequence sentence cards and earn points by justifying each placement with evidence from a source.

  4. Examine school arrival instructions, identify one unclear step, and rewrite the directions for a new student.
