What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students interpret sources to figure out how a concept or process works. They create clear explanations using accurate details, logical organization, and helpful text features.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can combine information from articles, diagrams, and examples into one accurate explanation. Their own text shows clear steps or relationships, uses relevant evidence, and fits the intended audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize a source instead of explaining how or why something works. They may copy source wording, list disconnected steps, or add visuals that do not clarify the explanation.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article and diagram about water filtration. Ask them to explain the process to a ninth grader in 150 words, using two source details and clear sequence words.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups mixed cards showing a process, then have them arrange the cards and create a labeled one-page explanation.

  2. Ask students to explain how a familiar process works, then identify where a reader might need more detail or evidence.

  3. Play Explanation Relay, with teams adding one accurate sentence at a time while avoiding repetition and unsupported claims.

  4. Have students study a workplace guide, such as safety instructions, then revise one section for clarity, accuracy, and audience needs.
