What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students interpret written, visual, or multimedia sources to understand how an idea or process works. They then create a clear text that teaches the concept or process to someone else.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the main concept, key steps, and relationships in written, visual, or multimedia sources. They produce an accurate explanation with clear organization, relevant details, and useful transitions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy source wording instead of explaining ideas in their own words. They may list facts or steps without showing sequence, cause, or connections. Some add unsupported details when the source is unclear.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage and flowchart about how a bill becomes law. Ask them to write one paragraph explaining the process using both sources.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use mixed-up instruction cards to sequence a paper-folding task, then revise the directions after classmates test them.

  2. Compare a paragraph and diagram explaining the same process, then write which format clarifies each step and why.

  3. Play Explanation Relay: teams add one accurate step, transition, or supporting detail to explain how a familiar system works.

  4. Create a one-page guide explaining a school process, such as submitting an assignment or requesting schedule help, for incoming students.
