What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather meaning from a read-aloud, diagram, picture, or short passage. They explain an idea or sequence by speaking, drawing, labeling, or writing simple sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the main idea or steps in a read-aloud, picture, diagram, or short passage. They create an accurate drawing, oral explanation, or short written text that teaches the idea clearly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy words without showing what they mean. They may place steps out of order, leave out a key detail, or draw pictures unrelated to the explanation.
How to Assess It
- Give students three picture cards showing handwashing. Ask them to order the cards, then draw and label a chart that teaches someone how to wash their hands.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs build a block structure, then draw and label directions another pair can follow to rebuild it.
Read a simple process book, then ask, "Which step matters most, and what could happen if we skipped it?"
Play Sequence Relay by having teams arrange picture cards, explain the order, and check another team's sequence.
Examine classroom signs or recipe cards, then have students create a sign that explains how to complete a familiar classroom routine.
