What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read, view, or listen to texts to learn how a concept or process works. They explain that learning by creating an organized written, spoken, or visual text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify key ideas, details, and steps in an informational text. They create a clear explanation using their own words, logical order, accurate facts, and helpful text features.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy sentences instead of explaining ideas in their own words. They may leave out key steps, mix up the order, or rely on pictures without connecting them to the written text.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short text about the water cycle. Ask them to explain the process in four sentences, using accurate details and sequence words.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs follow written directions to make a paper helicopter, then revise one unclear step based on what happened.
Ask students to write: How does a seed become a plant, and which details help a reader understand each stage?
Give teams mixed-up process cards to sequence, then have them justify the order using transition words and evidence from a source.
Study the school recycling guide, then rewrite it as a clear set of directions for new fourth-grade students.
