What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share ideas in discussion and writing, then respond to others with relevant questions, comments, or evidence. They explain meaningful links among parts of one text, multiple texts, personal experiences, and real-world issues.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use specific details to explain connections among ideas, texts, experiences, and the wider world. They listen or read closely, respond directly to others, and adjust their message for the task and audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a connection without explaining how it supports an idea. They may also repeat a classmate’s point, switch topics, or rely only on personal experiences instead of text details.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short passages and ask: “How are these texts connected, and how does that connection change your thinking?” Require one cited detail and one response to a partner.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups detail cards from two texts, then have them sort the cards and connect related ideas with string on chart paper.
Ask partners, “Which connection helped you understand the text better, and why?” then have each student summarize the partner’s answer.
Play Connection Relay, where teams draw a detail card and earn a point by explaining a clear within-text, cross-text, or world connection.
Read a local news article and a related story, then write a note explaining how both connect to an issue in the community.
