What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read or view information to identify a problem, possible solutions, and useful evidence. They create a message that recommends an action and aims to shape an audience's choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select facts that clearly relate to the problem and compare possible responses. They create a focused message with a recommendation, supporting evidence, and a clear request for the intended audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may state a strong opinion but give no facts to support it. They may copy every source detail, ignore the intended audience, or suggest a solution that does not address the problem.

How to Assess It

Give students three facts about wasted paper at school. Ask them to write a four-sentence note recommending one action, using two facts and naming the audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups problem, evidence, and solution cards, then have them match relevant evidence and workable solutions on a poster.

  2. Ask, "Should our school replace homework packets with reusable folders?" Students write a claim for the principal using two provided facts.

  3. Play Evidence Match, where teams earn points by choosing the fact that best supports a recommendation for each problem card.

  4. Students survey classmates about playground needs, tally responses, and write a recommendation to the student council based on the results.
