What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather facts from a short text, image, chart, or conversation about a problem. They compare possible solutions and choose one supported by evidence. They write or speak to help a specific audience decide what to do.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can clearly name the problem and find details that matter. The student proposes a workable solution, supports it with evidence, and addresses the intended audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may state an opinion without using facts from the source. They may suggest a solution that does not address the problem. Some use forceful language but forget to explain why their audience should agree.

How to Assess It

Give students this prompt: “The class has 20 new books, 10 empty shelf spaces, and two unused bins. Write a note recommending a solution.” Require one fact and one reason.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out a messy supply bin; students inventory its contents, read container labels, then write a two-step organization plan.

  2. Read two proposed playground rules, then discuss: Which rule solves the stated problem best, and what detail supports your choice?

  3. Play Solution Match with problem, evidence, and proposal cards; teams build logical sets and explain each match.

  4. Have students review cafeteria waste totals and write the principal a note recommending one change, supported by a number from the chart.
