What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read, view, or listen to information about a problem or choice. They use relevant details to propose a solution or persuade an audience to act.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the problem, compare possible responses, and choose relevant evidence. They create a clear message that recommends an action suited to a specific audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give an opinion without using facts from the source. They may suggest a solution that does not address the stated problem or audience.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short letter about wasted food in the cafeteria. Ask them to write three sentences proposing a solution, using one fact from the letter.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a mock cafeteria waste report and sticky notes, then have them sort evidence and build a practical action plan.
Ask students to write: Which playground improvement should the principal approve, and what evidence would persuade the principal?
Run an evidence match game where students pair claims about a class issue with facts that best support each claim.
Students review local water-use data, then create a flyer recommending one realistic way families can reduce waste.
