What Students Need to Do

Students build word knowledge using context clues, word parts, reference tools, and repeated use. They apply general, academic, and subject-specific words when reading, speaking, and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students infer a word’s meaning, confirm it with a reliable source, and explain which clues helped. They use academic and subject-specific words accurately in discussion and writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume the first dictionary definition always fits. They may also copy a meaning without checking context, confuse related word forms, or use new words in unnatural ways.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph containing an unfamiliar word. Ask them to define it, cite one context clue, and use it correctly in a new sentence.

   Give groups word, prefix, root, suffix, definition, and example cards to match, then have them explain each completed set.

   Ask students to explain how one word changes meaning across a science article, a news report, and a conversation.

   Play vocabulary charades using academic verbs, with teammates naming the word and using it in a clear sentence.

   Collect words from menus, signs, product labels, or news headlines, then discuss how each audience and setting shapes word choice.
