What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine precise meanings of unfamiliar general, academic, and subject-specific words using context and reference tools. They use those words accurately when speaking and writing for different audiences and purposes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain a word’s meaning in a passage, including its connotation and subject-specific use. The student chooses precise vocabulary and adjusts wording for a lab report, class discussion, or workplace email.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a familiar word has the same meaning in every subject, such as “table” in conversation and data analysis. They may choose impressive-sounding words that do not fit the meaning, tone, or grammar of a sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph containing the word “significant.” Ask them to define it from context, cite one clue, and use it in a formal sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs vocabulary cards from science, history, and daily life to sort by meaning, context, and likely audience.
Ask students to compare how “argument” works in everyday conversation and literary analysis, then write two sentences showing the difference.
Play Context Clue Relay: teams infer highlighted words from short passages, name the clue used, and earn a point for accurate explanations.
Have students revise a casual text message into a professional email, replacing vague words with precise academic or workplace vocabulary.
