What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine meanings and shades of meaning in literary, academic, technical, and workplace texts. They select precise words that fit the purpose, subject, and audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students infer unfamiliar meanings using context, word parts, and reference tools. They choose accurate terms and adjust their wording for academic, technical, or professional audiences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume a familiar word keeps the same meaning in every subject. They may use jargon or thesaurus choices without checking connotation, tone, or audience.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Read, “The committee’s tentative approval was contingent on revised cost estimates.” Define tentative and contingent, then rewrite the sentence for a general audience.
