What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine meanings and shades of meaning in literary, academic, technical, and workplace texts. They select precise words that fit the purpose, subject, and audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students infer unfamiliar meanings using context, word parts, and reference tools. They choose accurate terms and adjust their wording for academic, technical, or professional audiences.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume a familiar word keeps the same meaning in every subject. They may use jargon or thesaurus choices without checking connotation, tone, or audience.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Read, “The committee’s tentative approval was contingent on revised cost estimates.” Define tentative and contingent, then rewrite the sentence for a general audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort word cards from job postings, research abstracts, and news reports by register, then revise one word placement students dispute.

  2. Discuss how replacing “asserts” with “claims,” “argues,” or “insists” changes a writer’s tone and credibility in one paragraph.

  3. Teams play a context-clue relay, defining highlighted words and citing the exact clue that supports each answer.

  4. Rewrite a school absence explanation as a text to a friend and an email to an employer, choosing words suited to each audience.
